Key points

Start here: Meaning of distribution

A farmer in Benue harvests yams. A manufacturer in Aba makes shoes. A brewery in Lagos bottles malt drinks. None of these goods is useful until it reaches the person who wants it, perhaps a family in Maiduguri. The activities that move goods from the producer to that family are called distribution.

Distribution is the process of moving goods and services from producers to final consumers. Distributive trade refers to the buying and selling (wholesale and retail trade) involved.

Distribution is part of production because production is not complete until goods reach the final consumer (Topic ec7). It creates:

Aids to trade that support distribution

Worked example 11.1

Name the utility created: (a) moving tomatoes from Kano to Port Harcourt; (b) storing rice from harvest to the lean season; (c) a shopkeeper selling a radio to a customer.

  1. (a) Place utility.
  2. (b) Time utility.
  3. (c) Possession utility.
Place; time; possession
⚠️ Common mistake: saying distributors are "not producers because they make nothing". Economists count anyone who helps satisfy wants, including traders and transporters, as producers.
Try it yourself. Name two aids to trade.
Show solution
Any two: transport, warehousing, banking, insurance, advertising, communication.
